Rebecca stands to inherit quite a bit of money from her deceased aunt who never married.  The stipulation is that she must marry within the Amish faith.  Why?  No one understands until the executor of the estate shows Rebecca letters from her deceased aunt.

Where this situation may be cause for celebration in the English world, in the Amish world, it is cause for worry.  Rumors abound that Rebecca only wants to marry John, her fiancé, in order to earn the inheritance.  Then, there is the fact that greed is looked down upon in the Amish religion.  Rebecca is denied communion.  Will she be denied a wedding, also?

As a side plot, Rachel, a spoiled Amish woman, feels entitled to the inheritance.  She wished death upon her husband, his goats, and perhaps even upon his unborn child.  This tangent was just as exciting as the main plot.

The characters are wonderfully developed.  They were multi-dimensional.  Throughout the book, I felt strong emotions of pity, joy, and disdain.

I just love the Amish genre.  Jerry S. Eicher adds an authenticity to the often idealized lifestyle.   Rightfully so; he has worked hand-in-hand with the Amish and Mennonites for years.

I have read the other two books in The Adams County Trilogy, but it has been a while.  Rebecca’s Choice can easily be read without reading the other books.  However, why would you want to do so?  This is top-notch Amish writing!
